Scrimshaw bar tools

My name is Jeffrey Pierce and I was fortunate enough to have taken part in the renaissance of scrimshaw back in the early s at the tender age of Back in the 50's the practice of scrimshaw had basically died out along with anyone associated with the long past whaling industry. Fortunately, a family friend, Milton Delano, from my hometown of Fairhaven which shares the great harbor of New Bedford, was introduced to scrimshaw by an old man that used to be a cabin boy on a whaleship.

This was in the early s and Mr. Delano went on to do many great examples of scrimshaw including many special examples of scrimshaw for the Kennedy family. Along with scrimshaw instruction from Mr. Delano I also got my first scrimshaw lesson from Tim Richards; another family friend from my town.

One more notable Renaissance scrimshander who I learned about scrimshaw from was Milton Hulina. He actually was responsible for starting the use of scrimshaw for jewelry back in the late s in New Bedford which started the rebirth of the art form.

So to briefly conclude my Scrimshaw career, I practiced the art since ; soon selling it and then scrimshawing for people who sold it retail and to stores until I finished college and my active duty in the Navy.

Soon after my return from active duty, I started making and selling scrimshaw to stores myself, while slowly hiring people to help with the production and sales. The art of scrimshaw dates back to whaling days over years ago. The intricate hand carvings and engravings done by American whalemen are accepted as America's most important folk arts.

Scrimshaw refers to the carvings or engravings of assorted bone and ivories. This is different from a plastic coating because it is so thin, fluctuations in barometric pressure will allow the gasses inside the pores to pass through the wax, whereas a plastic coating will inhibit this.

You will also find that a varnish or urethane coating will eventually craze, archival wax will not. When applied, it creates a micro-thin, lustrous layer that enhances shine while preventing damage. I find this works very well as long as your piece is thoroughly dry — this is especially important when you are working with oil paint — the renaissance wax can dissolve and lift out any unhardened oil paint.

If you are working under a deadline, you may wish to use India ink as your medium since it dries much faster hours instead of weeks. Available at Amazon. This is a classic low-power microscope. The binocular 10XX stereo microscope on a boom-arm with a light gives clear sharp images.
