I tried disabling the modchip and enabling it again and now, the system won't even read any discs. If you disabled it through holding the start button at boot then all you need to do is completely turn it off and then turn it back on again to enable it again.

Look up the model in the system information on the main menu if you want to know which model it is. There are some exceptions but generally most super old PS2 modchips kind of suck. You'd have to open it up to find what's inside. This mod is going to make me blow my brains out. As for the metal shield causing issues you'll want to see if anything is getting squished. On the slims some spots just don't work for placing the chip.
